NACS Categorization Policy

POLICY OBJECTIVE (S)

THE HIGH LEVEL DESIRED OUTCOME (S) RESULTING FROM THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE POLICY AND / OR THE REASONS WHY THIS OUTCOME (S) IS NECESSARY.

Products are all grouped.  There are many ways of grouping products and Retsol has decided to follow the NACS (National Association of Convenience Stores) methodology of putting products into logical groups.  Each product is to be merchandised, sold and reports on in a group.

POLICY

THE ACTION (S) THAT NEEDS TO TAKE PLACE AND / OR THE STANDARD THAT NEEDS TO BE ACHIEVED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE POLICY OBJECTIVES.

Each product will be allocated to a category by your franchisor.  This category will be used largely for merchandising and reporting purposes.

POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

PROCEDURES / ACTIVITIES / STEPS THAT NEED TO BE COMPLETED SEQUENTIALLY TO ACHIEVE THE POLICY OBJECTIVES.
THE POLICY IMPLEMENTATION FORMS THE BASIS FOR BUSINESS REVIEWS.

In addition to using the NACS definitions, product barcodes will be utilised as the primary unique product identifier for reporting, ordering, etc.  Subject to individual POS systems, barcode scanning will be the mechanism whereby all till point transactions will be processed.  Dealers are requested to ensure that all barcodes are updated and correct in their systems as per the barcodes in the Product Book.  If operators are aware of the same products having multiple barcodes (caused by importing of products from multiple different regions) then please email detailed information to Retsol (supplychain@retsol.africa).

  1. All products are to be grouped and labelled by the outlet’s franchisor.
  2. The franchisor will determine which categories have adjacencies with other categories.
  3. Products are to be merchandised in groups / NACS categories.
